Banned Book Week is a national library event where libraries spread awareness of "book banning", or where certain groups try to restrict patron access to different books.
Any book can arguably be banned! If it's too scary, too different, too happy, too sad, anything, people are afraid that it will hurt or ruin a patron's experience or growth.
At UHS, we put out some of the banned books from several national lists, including student favorites like the Harry Potter series, Wings of Fire, Hunger Games, and more. There are also classics such as Call of the Wild by Jack London, The Giver by Lois Lowry, and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Many of these books feature what some say is too much violence, government resistance, or language.
